Canopy Solutions

Planting Shade, Growing Justice

Across Minneapolis, tree cover isn’t just uneven, it’s unjust. Neighborhoods in the city’s designated Green Zones, primarily in North and South Minneapolis, have been historically underfunded and overexposed to pollution and extreme heat. These same neighborhoods often have less than 15% tree canopy, while wealthier, whiter areas enjoy coverage over 40%. That imbalance isn’t cosmetic. It’s deadly.

Communities with low tree cover are 10 to 15 degrees hotter during summer heatwaves. Residents face higher risks of asthma, heart problems, and heat-related illness. Utility bills climb as families rely on air conditioning to stay safe. Meanwhile, tree-rich neighborhoods benefit from natural cooling, cleaner air, and better long-term health outcomes.

Canopy Solutions is MN350’s community-powered response. In partnership with Great River Greening and funded by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, this initiative brings environmental justice directly to Minneapolis streets through tree planting, education, and hands-on community leadership.

This is more than a greening project. It’s a climate justice strategy built from the ground up. By expanding access to shaded space, we’re working toward a future where everyone, regardless of zip code, can breathe clean air, stay cool in the summer, and live in a neighborhood rooted in care.

Did you know?

A single mature tree can:

  • Reduce local air temps by up to 9°F

  • Absorb 48 lbs of CO₂ annually

  • Lower flood risk by reducing stormwater runoff

  • Improve mental health and neighborhood cohesion

Tree inequity is one of the most visible and fixable environmental injustices in our cities. This project is a step toward healing and resilience.

About Our Partners

Great River Greening is a Minnesota-based nonprofit specializing in community-driven land restoration and urban forestry. Since 1995, they’ve worked across hundreds of sites to restore healthy ecosystems and build environmental leadership.

Minnesota DNR supports local climate adaptation and equity projects through targeted community grants. Their support for Canopy Solutions helps us bring this work directly to communities most affected by climate injustice.
