Position Description: 350.org Midwest Regional Field Organizer

Reporting Line: [Joint report] 350.org Field Director and MN350 Executive Director and Deputy Director
Purpose: To develop 350’s organizing networks in a key region of the United States and increase public participation in resisting fossil fuels and campaigning for equitable climate solutions. The regional organizer will use digital platforms and traditional organizing skills, to support individuals and groups on leadership development, strategic planning, campaign development and organizing coordination. The Midwest field organizer position will be based out of MN350, an independent local non-profit that organizes statewide and regionally for climate justice.
Required Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in the nuts and bolts of organizing including recruiting, organizing, training, and supporting volunteer-led grassroots organizations and experience supporting the development of effective leaders.
- Experience or familiarity organizing with an orientation to movement building and broader social justice approach, including working in diverse coalitions, especially in communities of color, low-income communities, and communities impacted by climate change.
- Campaign strategy, planning, and volunteer management experience.
- Proven ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
- Ability to adapt to and juggle evolving and competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently as part of a remote team and communicating over phone, Slack, and messaging programs.
- Enthusiasm and ability to travel up to 25% of your staff time including a valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Responsibilities
- Work as part of the U.S. Organizing Department to grow the scale, capacity and diversity of our activist network and mobilize the public around 350’s campaign objectives.
- Assist local groups with strategic planning, campaign development and development of strategic coalitions, drawing on the experience and expertise of MN350/MN350 Action, one of the largest and most successful 350 local affiliates.
- Integrate the activities of 350 chapters throughout the Midwest into ongoing climate justice campaigns. Consider where and how to leverage the campaigns of each chapter to consider common movement building objectives.
- Where appropriate and most useful, support one or more specific campaigns of MN350 – particular those deemed to have potential regional value.
- Use traditional organizing and digital platforms to coach local groups and volunteers on organizing skills, movement building, campaigns, mobilization and creative action, help to develop local group leadership, infrastructure and capacity.
- Assist in development of organizing plans for 350.org campaigns and actions; organize local groups and partners to participate in campaigns and actions.
- Build collaborative relationships with allied groups and new constituencies in order to build powerful, diverse, regional climate justice networks.
- Plan and coordinate local convergences, trainings and other regional meetings.
- Foster and develop a deeper understanding and effort around intersectional, climate justice and allyship organizing in local groups and campaign teams.
- Maintain a working knowledge and use of 350.org’s digital communication systems, CRM, Action Network, etc.
- Support 350.org’s digital and communications teams with content creation as needed.
- From time to time, represent 350.org in the media, with high-profile partners and in other public venues and contribute work towards 350.org’s overall mission that is outside of standard responsibilities and instead relies solely on geographic location or work capacity.
Salary and benefits
Will be determined commensurate with experience. The position will pay $44,000 to $47,000 plus full benefits. This is currently a one-year position, which will be funded longer term if other funds are secured.
