MN350 statement on Minneapolis police killing of Amir Locke
MN350 is heartbroken by and strongly condemns the reckless and senseless killing of Amir Locke by Minneapolis police and joins the Racial Justice Network in demanding that Officer Hanneman be immediately terminated, that Gov. Walz appoint a special prosecutor to charge Hanneman for the murder of Amir Locke, and that Mayor Frey immediately end the use of no knock warrants by Minneapolis Police officers.
This killing again vividly and tragically demonstrates the profound injustices of a criminal justice system with a long history of targeting, dehumanizing, abusing and executing victims solely because of their race. Amir Locke was not even named in the search warrant that led to his death. He was denied his rights, assumed guilty, and executed by police within seconds of them entering the space where he was sleeping. Following these heinous events, the Minneapolis Police Department spun a narrative to the public that strategically concealed / obfuscated the reality of their guilt and portrayed Locke as a dangerous suspect, further brutalizing him even after his death.
MN350’s mission is founded on the belief that all Minnesota residents, regardless of skin color, zip code or income, deserve a more livable planet and safe and healthy communities where all of us, without exception, can thrive. Fighting climate change requires dismantling our intertwined systems of oppression by uprooting the systems of racism, gender oppression, predatory capitalism, and the dispossession of Indigenous people. There is no climate justice without racial justice.
We join with our community in grieving the loss of our neighbor and extend our deepest sympathies to Amir Locke’s family and friends.
MN350 is a statewide group working to make Minnesota a national leader in a just transition to a clean energy economy. MN350 Action is its political and advocacy arm.
